The life of Jesus truly embodies all these characteristics. He was so kind and compassionate to the people he met, patient with his disciples, self-sacrificing by doing good to others. He trusted people to the end, even as they betrayed Him. He set Himself to Jerusalem to be crucified, the ultimate sign of perseverance. Truly, the life of Jesus was one of love; he lived it; he breathed it.
Love according to this world is very one-tracked. It’s all about romance, getting attention, what you want in the end. It’s much more of a feeling than anything substantial, that requires sacrifice. Love, in the biblical sense, is much more eternal and it manifests itself from a personal relationship with the One who is love.
I think my concept of love still easily goes with the world’s. My love for others is so easily based on other’s attention to me. I so easily shy away from loving others as Christ loved me. The only way to love others in this way is to draw closer to the one who died for me, for I know that I do not have the strength or character to do it on my own. I pray that I can commit to live a life of love, not as the world gives, but the kind Christ gave us through His life.
