Recap of InterHigh Monthly #3 – DNA by Design

IMG_7728Once again, over 150 high school and junior high school students decided to spend their saturday evening at InterHigh. This week we had a chance to look at the inner workings of the cell. The junior high school students got a head start in biology, and the high school students marveled at the intricate processes that take place in a not-so-simple cell.

Watch this animation video made by scholars at Harvard.

It’s the DNA in each cell that makes these intricate processes possible. DNA, as anyone who takes high school biology knows, is encoded information. And if it’s encoded information, then who put the information there? If you opened up your Scrabble board game box and saw the letter pieces in disarray then you would think nothing of it. But, if upon opening it some letters were arranged and spelled, “Let’s play Monopoly instead,” then you would immediately wonder who put that message there.   You would not say that it happened by chance and be amazed that a statistically improbable event just happened.  In fact it would be unreasonable for you to suspect this than your friend who wants to play monopoly.  We need to be reasonable.  It takes intelligence to encode information. You and I didn’t but the info in DNA.  Neither did our parents.  Nor did it come through accident or by random mutations over time.  As technology advances and we’re able to discover more about nature, we seem to see more evidence for an intelligent creator.

And so, what we learned in the cell this saturday testifies to what we read in scripture in Psalm 139:13-14. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

After dinner and games, we ended our evening with praise and worship, and a message from Pastor Will.  He showed a clip from the movie, “Miracle” and encouraged all of us to live ourIMG_7765lives honoring God, not hypocritically.  Pastor Will likened Christian discipleship to being on Jesus’ team:  We all wear Jesus Jerseys, with his name on the front and our name on the back.  We need to realize that the name on the front (Jesus) is more important than the name on the back (our personal name).  And what we do as Christians honor God’s name, or drag it through the mud.

Exodus 20:7 reads, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.”  This commandment is more than just “not swearing” or saying Jesus’ name in vain.  It’s about living a life that honors the name of God.

The students had a great time.  We look forward to seeing them at the winter camp.  Praise the Lord for InterHigh Monthly 3!
